Once your wedding date is set and you have chosen your ceremony and reception locations, it is time to shop for a wedding dress. Not only is the style of dress important, but so is the fabric. A bride would not want to be stuck in a dress made for winter weddings in the middle of the summer, so how do you choose the right fabric for you? Here are some of the most common wedding dress fabrics.
One of the most popular bridal fabrics, satin is the most durable and most common fabrics. It is smooth and offers a lot of body. It is comfortable and is a good choice for every body type, especially brides that are looking for rouched or ball gown dress types. Satin is a thicker material, but is used in bridal dresses all year round.
A perfect material for summer weddings, chiffon is a lightweight, woven fabric. It is usually layered over a heavier fabric for a flowing look. Many bridesmaids dresses are also made with chiffon, but care must be taken with the fabric as it can snag on jewelry or other items easily.
Lace comes in a variety of styles, and one of the most popular for wedding dresses is Chantilly for summer as it is a more open pattern, and Venise for the winter time as it is more textured. Like chiffon, care should be taken as to not snag the dress with jewelry and it is sometimes paired with chiffon for sleeves in more vintage designed dresses. If you plan to have open flames such as candles, wedding sparklers, or a bonfire during your wedding reception, you need to be very careful if you choose a lace dress because it can inadvertently catch if you’re not careful.
Usually silk or a synthetic, charmeuse is usually used in more fitted dresses, but can be particularly unforgiving. Its liquid like look is luxurious and elegant especially in column dresses, but it can show flaws and may not be the first choice for brides.
Though there are always a few options outside of these fabric types available, the vast majority of wedding dress will be made from one of these materials. They are by far the most popular choices for wedding dress manufacturers. Just make sure that you are choosing the right fabric for the time of year and the look that you are after and your wedding dress is sure to look fabulous on your wedding day.
